Faculty of Environmental Design, Ahmadu Bello University, has organized a maiden conference tagged ‘The Environment: Sustainable Development and Emerging Possibilities’.
The three-day conference, which began on Wednesday, 29th June, 2021, was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Danladi A. Ameh.
The Vice-Chancellor, Bingham University, Karu, Nassarawa State, Prof. W.B. Qurix, delivered a keynote address at the occasion in a paper, entitled ‘Transforming Our Environment Through Sustainable Planning and Design’.
In his address of welcome, the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Design, Prof. Umar A.A. Sullayman, listed the numerous benefits of attending conferences that include, among others, exchange of opinions about the latest happenings in the academia.
Prof. Sullayman further said that networking with fellow researchers and building professional relationships as well as staying abreast of the latest trends, developments and discussions in various academic fields were also part of conference gains.
The Dean expressed the hope that the Faculty conference would henceforth be an annual or biannual event where topical issues would be exhaustively discussed.
Over the years, according to him, the Faculty produced seasoned academics, statesmen, technocrats, industrialists, prolific creators and private practitioners who have carved a niche for themselves in their chosen careers within Nigeria and beyond.
The conference was chaired by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim. Prof. Doko is the Vice Chairman, Environmental Design Alumni Association (EDAA), Ahmadu Bello University.
She spoke on the significance of the conference and homecoming, saying that the essence was to provide ways of sustaining the environment and to establish cordial interaction between the academic and government for the overall development of the nation as a whole.
The Minister also said that the homecoming would be an engagement for the alumni in paying back to their alma mata positively.
There was a joint exhibition shortly after the conference at Kashim Ibrahim Library.
There was also a dinner later in the day where the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, gave a pep talk on the importance of alumni. At the dinner, the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, donated one million Naira (N1,000,000) to the conference local organizing committee and five hundred thousand Naira (N500,000) to Department of Urban and Regional Planning, where he graduated from.
