The Research examines the Fourty year growth pattern of 774 major settlements which are either Local Government or State capital. The primary objectives of the research is to establish the footprints of urbanization in Nigeria, the explanatory factors and impacts. The explantion of the pattern of growth is interogated by 3 factors: Climate change, Transport Infrastructure and Topography; while the impacts are explored along 3 perspeectives: Quality of Urban growth, Livelihood and Poverty and Insecurity. Findings from the research would permit the modelling of growth patterns of major settlements in the Country and the simulation of potential future changes. Data on the Spatial Growth history of settlements in Nigeria is not readily available which affects the quality of urban planning and policy formulation. The research is funded under the National Reseach Fund (NRF) grant approved by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
